A native of Upstate New York, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the State University of New York at Fredonia, and then an A.S. in Nursing from the State University of New York, Regents Excelsior College.
She went on to earn Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Tampa, and a post-graduate certificate in addiction and substance abuse counseling from the University of South Florida. She has four years’ experience working with patients who have addiction issues and is certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Bouwhuis spent nearly 15 years at St. Anthony’s Hospital in the Oncology and Ambulatory Care units, followed by nine years at Pain Relief Centers.
She and her husband enjoy camping and all things Disney. They have four dogs.
